Some Facts About The School Prom Proms have become extremely popular in the UK over the past few years and are now a major event in the school calendar. The majority of high schools in the UK now hold a prom for their students to celebrate the end of their school life, either in year 11 or year 13 - even some primary schools are having a prom before they make their big move up to high school! The word prom is short for promenade - a formal dance, ball/a march of all the guests at the opening of a ball. In Ireland a prom is also known as Debs from the french word Debutante meaning 'female beginner'. In Scotland boys traditionally wear a kilt to their prom. Boys prom attire traditionally consists of black or white formal wear - suit with tie or tuxedo and bow-tie. They may choose a button hole - a floral decoration for their jacket lapel. Girls traditionally wear ball gown style dresses - of which there are many to choose from. There are numerous online, high street shops and the smaller local shops selling a wide range and style of prom dresses at fabulous prices, with new collections released each prom season. Girls may wear a corsage - a small bouquet of flowers worn on a dress or around her wrist - with colours to compliment her prom dress. |
